Adenomyosis

Occurs when tissue from the internal lining of the uterus grows into the muscle layer of the uterus, which can lead to an enlarged or bulky uterus and typically causes heavy & painful menstrual bleeding. For some women it man not cause any symptoms.

This is usually detected through an ultrasound or MRI but can only be confirmed following surgery

including:

  • hysteroscopy

  • hysterectomy

  • robotic hysterectomy

IS IT ENDOMETRIOSIS OR ADENOMYOSIS, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

It is possible these can exist together in the same person, both may cause Pelvic pain however these are different.

Endometriosis occurs when cells from the internal lining of the uterus are found outside the uterus whilst

Ademomyosis occurs when these cells are found within the muscle of the uterus itself.

TREATMENT OF ADENMYOSIS

Treatment for Adenomyosis aims to stop heavy menstrual bleeding and relieve symptoms of pain, these can include Mirena IUD to suppress menstruation.

Hysterectomy is the only definitive cure for Adenmyosis which will stop menstrual bleeding however other treatment may be required for pelvic pain from the pelvis.
